Most of my posts on this blog have focused on my favorite subject: ME. Don’t ever get a writer started on him/herself; they’ll launch into an autobiography so long it will make WAR AND PEACE look like a Tweet. I’ll tear my solipsistic self away for just this one post to talk about my OTHER favorite subject: my eight-year-old son.

My boy Caelan is a true original. Like his iconoclastic parents, he is uninterested in kowtowing to conventions. From the time he could talk, he was fond of declaring, “You’re not the boss of me!” When his “bossy” parents first suggested NeurOptimalneurofeedback might be “good” for him, we were skeptical he would willingly participate.

Just to give you a little history, my son is a highly creative boy who has been diagnosed with a sensory process disorder, dyspraxia and anxiety.  At one point his second grade teacher insisted he suffered from ADHD because he had trouble focusing. I wasn’t convinced. I mean, this is a kid who  – when he is interested in something – has triple-beam laser focus. When he’s bored; not so much.  Since then, his second grade teacher’s contract was not renewed. In my son’s words, her lessons “didn’t dazzle me”.  The new special-ed teachers at his school have actually told us that they believe our son is “gifted”. (Every parent likes to believe their kid is “gifted”, but hey, they said it; I didn’t.)

Truth is, I could care less about a specific diagnosis or intelligence labeling.  I just wanted my son to get the help he needed to focus at school and make the most of his potential.

Over the summer, my wife and I started regular neurofeedback training sessions with our son. We noticed improvements immediately. He slept sounder. His speech was more articulate.  He was more present and focused. We experimented with running the sessions at different times of day and different durations – 30 or 45 minutes.

While school last year was a struggle for our son, this year has proven to be an entirely different story. Since we implemented a consistent brain training program, he is more focused, relaxed and actually loves going to school. Instead of a throwing a-kicking-screaming fit every morning, this year Caelan (with very little prompting from us) gets himself dressed and ready on time and is standing at the door waiting for us to drive him to school. When he gets home, he seems much more energetic and talkative instead of overwhelmed and exhausted. He is even negotiating the social challenges of school much more smoothly.

Caelan has been at the same school for four years now and everyone there knows him well. Suffice to say, we are not the only ones to notice his improvement. Teachers and administrators have picked up that Caelan is more outgoing and is much more attentive in the classroom. But the coup de grace of his progress came last week when my wife and I met with his speech therapist that worked with Caelan at the height of his struggles last year. She began by telling us just how well our son was doing and then shocked us by saying; “He doesn’t really need me anymore.” My wife and I did a double take.

Our son calls our NeurOptimal home neurofeedback system the “dream machine” because he had intense dreams from the first time he used the system.  While it does help with sleep, we think of NeurOptimal as the “dream machine” because it enables our son’s brain to be at its best so he can realize his every dream.
