Marjorie Lorenz holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts degree in Community Mental Health from Seattle University. She is a licensed mental health counselor in Washington State. Her license number is LH00007527. She is a clinical member of the American Counseling Association and the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association. She has been in private practice since 1999. She has joined the team at Tender Rock Counseling because of their commitment to a group of providers specially trained who embrace a multidisciplinary focus.
Marjorie was born in Ohio. Her family moved to the Bellevue area when she was going into the first grade. She enjoyed ballet, hiking, skiing, backpacking and other outdoor endeavors. She was in a campfire group during her school years and served the Bellevue community through volunteering. Marjorie married and raised two children. She made a commitment to go back to college after her children were in high school. Marjorie chose to pursue a counseling degree because she was intrigued by the human spirit and its creativity in negotiating change to life’s challenges and difficulties.
Marjorie sees life as a journey of making connections with one’s self, meaning, and others. She believes persons need healthy connections and attachments to face the constant changes and challenges life brings. She knows many individuals have faced traumatic events such as physical, psychological, sexual, spiritual, and emotional abuse in their family of origin or in their adult lives. Others may have experienced natural disasters, car accidents or other calamities. For many, there has been some breakdown in their connections with themselves, spirituality and/or with others. Whether one has experienced trauma, grief and loss, a significant life transition or suffers with depression and anxiety, Marjorie believes a safe, confidential, and supportive relationship in counseling can address a person’s need and desire for feeling understood and can facilitate personal change and growth.
Marjorie believes counseling is a collaborative relationship, in which the client’s uniqueness and desire for change needs to be held with the highest regard and respect. Identifying and addressing roadblocks to holistic living is a significant aspect of the counseling relationship. With this in mind, Marjorie knows that there is no one theory or counseling style that can fit an individual’s unique needs and way of being in the world. Because of this knowledge, Marjorie has been trained in and practices many counseling styles and interventions. She strives to understand how a person’s culture, environment, mental and physical health, spirituality, and personal history impact and influence their current functioning.
Marjorie has several special interests in her counseling practice. She has studied and trained in providing clinical services to individuals who have experienced traumatic events in their lives and suffer from the long-term effects of trauma such as: Post Traumatic Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Somatic response, and Relational Difficulties. She also is interested in the principles of mindfulness. Essentially, mindfulness means becoming fully aware of what is arising in one’s internal and external world, moment by moment, with non-reactivity, observation, and through a non-judging stance. Cultivating mindfulness is helpful in psychotherapy as it develops a person’s capacity to face inner and outer distress with greater calmness. I believe the development of mindfulness can lead to greater well-being, enhance one’s connection to self and others, and reduce the effects of stress.
Marjorie’s collaborative and holistic stances in her counseling relationships are founded on trust, honesty, and mutual respect. She looks forward to working with you as you look to address your concerns.
